Sometimes you have to do things you never thought you would ever do or maybe were afraid of. This year that “sometimes” was September 2014. I decided that, after six years it was time for me to go on vacation. To stay for one week somwhere I have never been before. That “somewhere” was in Porto, after Lisbon, the second-largest city in Portugal.

Why not go to Portugal?

With Eleanor Roosevelt’s quote in mind: “Do one thing everyday that scares you”. Besides the fact that I really needed a break from work and my daily routine, I knew now is the time. Book my ticket, go and travel.

Why Portugal? One year ago I met a Portuguese friend and after a spontaneous conversation on Facebook where he posted a picture with an amazing Porto view, I thought, why not go to Portugal?

So a few weeks later I had to plan my vacation and on a Saturday afternoon I booked my ticket online at Ryanair. I haven’t flown in years so it was very excited for me to book a ticket. A few days before departure I got a bit nervous, it sounds silly but I really was. I know this vacation would be filled with a lot of “first time” experiences.

Where will I stay in Porto?

Ofcourse I had to think about a place to stay in Porto for one week. I have read a few blogs where people mentioned that they had booked their stay through Airbnb. Because of all the positive experiences from other bloggers I decided to go and look for a studio or apartment on the Airbnb website.

It was very easy to look for a place to stay. With lot’s of photo’s from the apartments interior along with a good description of the apartment, the facilities in the local area and the must visit places around the apartment. It was very clear to me that I had to book my stay in Porto on the Airbnb website. In my next blogpost I will share more information and my experience during my stay at the booked Airbnb apartment.

My first visit to Eindhoven Airport

After packing my suitcase and making sure I had packed everything I need, it was time to go to Eindhoven Airport. My first visit to Eindhoven Airport to take my very first flight in years.

Besides the fact that I was travelling alone, it was also a very exciting experience to find my way at the airport, checking in, leaving my suitcase until I could walk to my seat on the airplane.

I am not afraid of flying but the moment the plane took off was very intense. That feeling you feel when the plane is in the air, wow! I really liked the feeling. So, so far so good.

Finally … I am in Porto!

In less than two hours the plane arrived in Porto. My Portuguese friend was very kind to welcome me and drive me to the apartment. Wow, I couldn’t believe that I was actually in Porto.

A whole week to explore the city, visit places, meet new people, relax and clear my head. Last but not least: To enjoy my vacation in Porto!

In my next blogpost I will share with you what it was like to stay in the apartment I booked through Airbnb. You don’t want to miss this!
